Noncircular Cavity Expansion in Undrained Soil: Semi-Analytical Solution

The cavity expansion approach has been a popular tool to interpret wide range of geotechnical problems over the last several decades. Most previous research focused on cylindrical and/or spherical cavities, whereas nonstandard cavities have received much less attention. To address this shortcoming, paper presents general theoretical framework for two-dimensional (2D) displacement-controlled undrained noncircular (N-CCE) in soil. new combines strain path method (SPM) concepts and conformal mapping determine soil velocity rate fields analytically. displacement subsequently are determined by integrating velocities rates along using series transformed ordinary differential equations. In study, modified Cam Clay (MCC) effective stress constitutive model was used stress–strain relationship, consolidation effects were captured finite-difference calculations. proposed methodology validated comparing reduced solution circular with traditional theory. A parametric analysis undertaken explore influence three shapes expansion-induced deformation mechanisms, shear strains, stresses, pore-water pressure development consolidation. can be implemented any critical state–based applied arbitrary problems.
